Flying high on his wedding day

Gurgaon News: So how do landowners from villages around Gurgaon flaunt their wealth, newly-gotten from selling prime realty? By taking to the skies of course.

On Monday, Farrukhnagar resident Rao Mansingh Yadav's son Jagdish paid Rs 1, 30, 000 for a 12-minute helicopter ride to his bride's home, barely 20-km away in Kapashera. And the entire airborne exercise was designed to impress the new in-laws.

Accompanied by his brother, brother-in-law and uncle, Jagdish boarded a Jet Ranger helicopter on his way to marry Nitu of Kapasahera village. What followed was a bit of an anti-climax though.

Jagdish's chopper was denied permission to land at the marriage venue by the air traffic controller (ATC) and had to instead make a tame touchdown at the domestic airport from where the groom took a Mercedes to reach his wedding venue.

But for Jagdish's neighbours and friends at Farrukhnagar, from where the chopper took off, it was an occasion to remember. Several hundred people turned up to wish the groom and it was celebration time in the village.

Though a little disappointed that his son was denied the pleasure of landing in style at the wedding venue, Jagdish's father Mansingh Yadav nevertheless managed to laugh off the incident. "Now I can tease my son's father-in-law throughout my life about the fact that there is no helipad in his village, which I could make in my locality," he said, a smile creasing his face.

Meanwhile, the bride's father Anil Yadav, a local businessman, said he had made every effort to ensure that his son-in-law landed directly at the wedding venue. "We had applied for all official clearances and got them except that of the ATCs. We had even started to construct a temporary helipad in a nearby farmhouse, but had to scrap the plan," Anil said.

To make sure that the bride's family did not feel cheated of the entire experience, Mansingh had the helicopter fly over the wedding venue. Interestingly, the helicopter was hired for only a one way trip and hence the bride is going to make her way back to her in-law's place in the black Merc on Monday night.

Explaining why he did not book the chopper for the return journey as well, Mansingh, a farmer, said, "We have to take the bride home at night as per our tradition and choppers are not allowed to fly then. Secondly, it would have cost us a lot to keep the chopper waiting for hours. I spent so much because I love my son very much. People who have enough money, spend it. I thought of this so that everyone in my village and locality would remember it forever."

Meanwhile, Mansingh has others thinking alike. This is not the first time that a family has hired a chopper to for a wedding in Gurgaon. Another family in Ullahwas had also taken wings to celebrate a wedding.

Said Wing Commander Pragat Singh, who piloted Jagdish's chopper, "This marriage season alone, I have ferried 15 grooms and they are from similar villages. The majority of them were from Punjab and NCR of Delhi."

In Gurgaon, ex-DMRC man helps lay the track for first private Metro stretch

Gurgaon News: Three months after he resigned from as director (projects and planning) of Delhi Metro, C B K Rao is leading the first ever private Metro project in the country. The 3.2-km stretch will be built in DLF cyber city in Gurgaon. Rao says the planning part is over and they are ready to hit the project part after the go-ahead from the Haryana government. The project, he says, is waiting for “in-principle approval” from the state government, for it is to be built on public land.

Rao says DLF Projects is scheduled to begin construction, “tentatively”, by March 2008; the project is expected to be completed by April 2010.

RITES is preparing the feasibility report, he says. “Details of diversion of utilities and affected trees are being identified at present.” The Metro in Gurgaon will be on elevated rail.

In the first phase, it is scheduled to run between Sikanderpur and Vishwakarma road, via the DLF cyber city up to the Gateway Tower. From there, it turns right and terminates at Mall of India. The link will have five stations.

The structural design, Rao says, is being created by SPA, and renowned architect Hafeez Contractor has been hired for the architectural design — to give an “aesthetic and pleasant structure”. The Metro here will have rubber-tiered coaches, which work without drivers. The third rail, located on the deck, will power the trains.

According to DLF administration the target customers are workers commuting from south/central Delhi and Shushant Lok to DLF Cibercity and Mall of India. As per estimates drawn so far, some 20,000 private vehicles and taxis will be reduced on this stretch after the Metro link comes up.

The DLF project is much smaller in scale compared to the Delhi Metro, Rao says. While Delhi Metro has a carrying capacity of 60,000-75,000 each way per hour, the DLF link will be a feeder system designed for a carrying capacity of 30,000 each way per hour. “This is chosen for the reason that ultimate demand on this route will be around much (30,000 persons each way per hour,” says Rao.

“The road is owned by the Haryana government, and we are waiting for their approval to start work after the in-principle approval,” he says. He expects the approval to come in a month’s time.

Shootout in Gurgaon school, one killed

Gurgaon News: In a shocking incident, a 14-year-old boy, studying in 8th class, was on Tuesday shot dead by two of his classmates inside a school in Gurgaon.

Police said two students, sons of property dealers, are believed to have fired five bullets from a licensed pistol at Abhishek Tyagi following a quarrel in the corridor at the end of the classes in the Euro International School.

Tyagi, who received four shots in all, including one in the temple and two on his chest from a close range, died on the way to hospital. No one else was injured in the shooting in the school in this prosperous satellite town outside Delhi.

The two boys, who are believed to have shot Tyagi dead, are detained by police.

Manoj Tyagi, a friend of Rajinder Tyagi, whose son was killed, told police that Abhishek had some quarrel with some of his colleagues a few days ago but the dispute between them had been resolved.

Police said they would investigate how the pistol was brought to school and also question the parent who owns the license.

For Gurgaon real estate agents, a gun is a must

Gurgaon News: It has got all the trappings of a big city but scratch a little deeper and you realise Gurgaon still obeys the law of the jungle.

The ongoing property boom and the predominance of small real estate operators have made Gurgaon top the state of Haryana in the total number of applications for arms licenses.

The number of approvals for gun licenses in Gurgaon has gone up alarmingly from just 60 odd in 2004 to a close to 300 this year.

A chilling statistic that can directly be blamed for incidents like which experts say is a fallout of the sudden rise of surprise billionaires in the area.

"Why did the dad have the gun in the first place for the son to use? Why would a builder whose business is buying and selling need a gun at all?” says President People's Action Advocacy Group, Sanjay Kaul.

But ask the real estate fraternity and they say with a profession like theirs a carrying a gun is a necessary evil.

“We deal with land and property so we have to keep a gun. But the guns must be kept such that the kids do not find them,” says Real Estate Agent, Ashok Bhardwaj.

But the sudden transformation from sons of the soil to real estate agents has left many families like the Yadavs struggling to keep a balance with the change and combined with professional hazards, for this family it turned out to be a deadly cocktail of coincidences.
